Hair cut on the cheap

After my run this morning I couldn’t help but notice the nastiness that is my hair. Suddenly I just couldn’t stand the length and dryness of it. I haven’t gotten a haircut since November of 2008. Yes, you read that right. November of 2008. I’ve been putting off going to the salon because quite frankly, I’m broke and would rather spend the 50 bucks elsewhere, like the grocery store. Before I knew it I was standing in front of the bathroom mirror with an old rusty scissor and a small compact. Time for a hair cut, ladies. Please keep in mind that I have no clue what I’m doing. I parted my hair in the middle and separated in into two sides. Please don’t mind the sweaty face and running mascara.

Pre cut

Without so much as a measure or even wetting my hair– snip snip, snip. Okay, don’t freak out. Grab the other side-snip, snip, snip.

Definitely not even. I could use some  layers.

Shit! Too many layers but there’s no turning back. Here’s the final product.

Len’s going to even it out tonight. Well, I’m certainly not in love with it but I saved 50 bucks!

I went to mimi this morning and we scratched the three category rule. I told her that it was too hard for me to start the days off accepting a binge. For next week I simply have to journal what I eat and the times. I had a hard tome conceptualizing what I eat so she wants to see it for herself.  We may or may not going back to the category strategy down the road. I told her I was thinking about the no flour/no sugar diet and she said that if I wanted to try if for a week to see how it feels I should, but that it’s not the solution. She’s right but it would feel damn good to clear my system of all it’s processed toxins. The rest of my therapy was spent talking about the dysfunctions within my family. My parents just finalized a dirty divorce so Mimi has been my sounding board. I don’t care what people say, divorce is hard regardless of how grown the kids are. Moving forward.

Have you ever had a day when it seems you break everything you touch? I’m pretty sure I just broke our washer and dryer. Sparks were flying and both machines just shit then bed. Not so awesome since I have wet clothes sitting in them. Then, after doing a little more trimming to the hair, I broke my damn sunglasses!! So annoying. Good news is that the sun is shinning and I just got some goodies at Trader Joe’s. The refried bean/hot sauce/hummus combo is back in action.

Back later with my grub!

  1. My parents are still married, I have no idea how, but I can only imagine how painful that must be. I’m glad you have a sounding board.

  2. Wowzers cutting your own hair… that’s ballsy! I was lucky that I wanted my parents to get divorced so it wasn’t hard at all.

    • oh i’ve been pushing for a divorce forever because they shouldn’t be married. it’s just hard seeing them hurt.

  3. WOW– I cannot believe you cut your own hair! Brave woman! But it looks awesome!

Sounds like you had a good session with Mimi. I definitely agree with you that divorce is hard on the kids at any age– I’ve had a few friends whose parents have divorced in recent years, and in some ways, it seems like it was almost harder on them than my friends whose parents divorced when we were little. When the kids are adults, it seems like there tends to be less care about making sure that it doesn’t get nasty for the kids sake, because everyone is an adult 😦

  6. wow, 2008 was a long time ago… 🙂

i used to cut my own hair, but then i just broke down and started getting someone else to do it! i’m glad you and mimi decided to stop the binge thing…it didn’t seem like it was working, and you weren’t happy with it, so it’s probably best to stop!

  14. So brave to cut your own hair! I’m slightly obsessed with mine, so I don’t even really trust hairdressers! I’m impressed by how well yours turned out, maybe you have a calling 🙂

Glad your meeting with Mimi was productive!

  15. I almost feel like divorce gets harder the older the kids are. One of my friends found out her parents were splitting up on graduation day – and she was (and still is) crushed. Mine split up when I was in 5th grade and maybe it’s just blocked out memories but I don’t remember being quite so hurt. It did take my parents 3 years to finalize a divorce though – the court battling was by far the worst part!

    • yes, court was totally ugly.

  17. OMG I can’t believe you cut your own hair.. I hadn’t gotten my cut for a year – not kidding. I sucked it up on the way home from work and went to the salon by my house only $37. Of course after tip and buying the product it was more like $60 but at least its cut.

  18. Linds-
I agree on the divorce thing mine got divorced about 13 yrs ago after i graduated HS and it still sucks they get along now but u know what no matter the age on the kids it’s hard…good lukc I am gla du have someone to talk to! Aout the hair…good work but if u are unhappy with it or would like to even it out just go to Hair Cuttery they cost 15 bucks less if no blow dry i think. I do that when my sister in law who is suppose to be my hair dresser is sick or was on maternity leave

  19. I’ve cut my own hair a few times. My results weren’t as good as yours 🙂

I’m glad you had a good session with Mimi. I agree that divorce is tough no matter what the age. I actually think it’s worse when the kids are older. My bf parents divorced when he was a senior in college and it was really hard for him. It was out of the blue and just a weird situation you know? Anyway, I’m glad you have someone to talk to about it. Keep your head up 🙂

  20. I trim my hair myself…with the angled bob I swear the front pieces grow faster than the back and the angle doesn’t grow together! Nice job! Maybe you should seek a side career?

My parents divorced when I was 14. Tough, but they felt they needed it, so whatever. I got over it. I have friends whose parents waited till all kids were graduated from college. All the “good” they thought they were doing was for naught…all the kids are pissed that the world they thought they were living in was a lie.

Personally, I think divorce is a crock and only OK in rare situations. Too many people give up for the sake of giving up it seems. Too many people also jump the gun on wedding bells, but that’s a different story.
